Live Life As it Is – The Psychology of Defeat

[ad_1]

Picture yourself as follow: You were in the final lap of a race; you’re now in the first position, leading all the way with the victory almost in your hand. You could smell the champagne and the beat of your heart is immeasurable. Instantly, you push your car, you can’t wait to pass the finish line. Then suddenly in the last corner of the circuit, your engine begin to malfunction, it stops working and the car losses power. Finally your car is stopping only a hundred meters before the finish line.

What is your reaction? You feel like the sky is falling onto you. You want to cry, all of the hope desert you and hurting your pride. You’re frustrated and begin to walk with the shoulder down just like a prisoner.

The situation you’ve pictured above is an analogy of what often happen in our real life. With the so high expectation we end up with nothing but a great disappointment. You thought that you have made a perfect plan then suddenly everything is working against you and left nothing on your favor. What’s wrong in this situation?

Some know how to deal with pressure and some don’t. Some people enjoy being pressured and the others think they destined to be a loser of life.

Just like in any sports, in this life you have to take victories and defeats. Although you work hard and make a perfect plan, you can’t always aim for success in everyday. There will be a moment-even once in a lifetime-which things are going not on your side. There may be people who are more passionate than you, luckier, may be in a slightly advantageous position. Most of the time, you will not realize this possibility. When you in the hardest condition of your life you simply feel that you are not born to be a champion, and hence, nothing you can do can give you a favor.

It takes time and requires maturity to accept things as they are. Sometimes, it’s hard to keep your head cool and keep strive to do your best regardless of the outcome will be.

Your expectation might favor you or not at all. A wise man once said that the higher the level of the expectation, the lower the level of the satisfaction. And it’s right. The future is not yours to see. You don’t have to think about anything in the future. Just think about present and give your best. Live your moment now. The only reality is the current situation. The past couldn’t be relived and the future might not ever come.

Now, picture yourself back in the race, but in slightly different moment. Instead of the situation in the final lap, now you roll back to the beginning: before the start. This is the final race of the season and you are leading the championship by only 1 point ahead of your toughest competitor. You were the pole sitter. The expectation of yours and your fans is agonizingly high. You really want to win. The excitement inside is above the limit and simply put your heart nearly flame.

Then you think deeper, that this sport is what it is. It’s just for fun, thrill, exhilaration and delight. You don’t have anything to do with the fact that your name will be written the records book or not! You don’t care whether you will finish in the top ten or not. You just want to do your job that you love as well as you can and the finish line is a different world which you will think later.

Similar in the real life, you have to learn to adapt and accept it. You also have to learn to live for yourself, your own ideals, your own goals, and your own reality. The hell it matters of what people might think, you will not be swayed by all of the emotion and praise. Whether the others slam you or raise you to heaven, it’s all the same for you.

You give your best. With the very normal expectation you live your life as it is. Sometimes you fail yourself, sometimes life pushes you around. But you never complain, you just go on, calmly, and trying to do your best.

Life is about your choose. You can blame others for your defeat, or you might learn from it and strengthen your steps to coast the next victory. A defeat today only means that you have to win tomorrow. Do not shed tears over failure and always control your expectation. Do everything for yourself, for your own pride. The result will follow, including the success.
